    When Karl Marx died in March , only about a dozen people attended his funeral at a cemetery in London, England, including family members. Yet, for more than a century after his death – and even until today – there have been few thinkers whose ideas have been as influential on various aspects of modern world . Western Marxism found support primarily among intellectuals rather than the working class, and orthodox Marxists judged it impractical. Nevertheless, Western Marxists’ emphasis on Marx’s social theory and their critical assessment of Marxist methodology and ideas have coloured the way even non-Marxists view the world.

    For Marx is a milestone in the development of Western Marxism since the Second World War. The book, first published in France in , has come to be regarded as the founding text of the school of 'structuralist Marxism' which was presided over by the fascinating and enigmatic figure of Louis Althusser.
